young and bored posted 03 03 06

“I’m bored” is the cry, there is nothing for me to do! Well hope is now on hand in the form of Oxygen, the local youthwork charity established by churches across the Borough.

Oxygen offers a range of activities for young people, whether they love music, sport, drama, dance or simply want to hang out with your friends then there is something for them to come to. These clubs are for young people from all different backgrounds and ethnicities,

Alongside these there are also drama, dance and streetwork projects for young people to come along, discover, learn, explore and adventure together. Oxygen director Richard James invited all young people from across Kingston to find out more about Oxygen,

“Oxygen brings together young people from across Kingston Borough through a range of activities and schemes. As a Christian project we want all young people to come in and take part and discover and explore the God given abilities and interests they have”

Anyone wanting to find out more about Oxygen should either contact the office on 020 8547 0566 or visit the Oxygen website www.oxygen-online.org. For those who simply want to come along then the dates you need to know are:

Introduction to Oxygen

Oxygen, Kingston YFC was established in 2001 by 20 churches across Kingston Borough who came together with the support of the local youth service and other youth work providers to establish a much needed work that aimed to serve and build relationships with its young people. A team that includes two full time workers, a team of GAP year workers and over 60 local volunteers staff Oxygen. The GAP year team are young people who take a year out after school or University in order to work with other young people in the borough.  In its first two years Oxygen has contacted over 1,500 young people and won several awards for its approach and delivery of youthwork. Oxygen’s work has also received the recognition and praise from across the local community;

“The Oxygen workers always make me feel welcome and involved. I love coming along and have learnt so much from them.”

“When I started at Barnfield I couldn’t play anything, now I am in a band and writing my own songs – its cool”

“I have great respect, praise and admiration for the fantastic work Oxygen is doing and has done with some of the most vulnerable, socially excluded, disaffected and challenging young people in Kingston Borough”

“Oxygen workers are aware of the need to provide young people with something positive to engage with and have a very full programme of activities for young people to access. As a result Oxygen and the police have built up an excellent working relationship”
