Meet Richard James - Oxygen Director

Richard James was born and brought up in South Wales, after graduating with a degree in Structural Engineering from University of Wales, Cardiff he worked as a Director of a shipping company, establishing and setting up new office as well as heading up the technical department with a turnover in excess of £1M.

Richard gave up this job in 1999 to establish a new outreach Youthwork charity in Swansea (Sketty Youth Project). Having successfully launched the work in Swansea Richard moved to South West London having been recruited to start Oxygen (Kingston YFC) in late 2001.

Over the last eight years, under Richard’s guidance, Oxygen has grown rapidly in impact and influence and has quickly established itself as a pioneering relational Youthwork charity, with innovative models of practice that have been shared with Youthwork providers nationwide. During this time Richard has gained a Masters degree in Youthwork and theological education (from Kings College London) and been published in various books and academic journals sharing ideas and practices for youth work and ministry.

"Richard is a star! What he has done in effective youth ministry far exceeds anybody's expectations. The implementation of his strategic thinking makes him one of the best Youth for Christ Directors in the UK. He has an enormous credibility amongst the local schools, government youth bodies etc. I would heartily endorse him."

Roy Crowne, Vice President Youth for Christ

He has run workshops and training for a number of Churches together, YFC, Dioceses and YMCA regional groups as well as spoken at numerous events and training conferences nationwide including Greenbelt, Youthwork the Conference and the Youth for Christ national conference.
