GRANT: METROPOLITAN POLICE KINGSTON

Friday Night’s at the Basement received a boost this month when the project received the financial support of the Metropolitan Police. 12 nights, one a month at the basement will now be sponsored by the Police as they give a grant of £2,400.

In addition to financial support the Police are going to make their Safer Neighbourhood teams (SNTs) available and aware of the opportunities that young people can access through the basement. Each month diffferent SNTs be on hand to listen, offer direction and support as well as give support to young people who have, or are afraid of becoming victims of crime.

The MPA support is great news for a project that is now regularly attracting capactiy crowds each weekend. Though it was only launched two months ago, the basement now attracts over 100 young people each weekend.

The MPA support for the basement is just one more indication of how important this project is not only for the young people but for the wider community of Kingston. Attention at Oxygen now turns to finding other commercial supporters who can join with the police and ensure the long term sustainability of this project.
